Groove Agent SE4 is a drum machine with huge scope for manipulating its library of sampled drum kits

It’ll still be in the plug-in folder for those who upgrade from version 7, but after a clean install our old projects that used Groove Agent One didn't load properly. It’s also annoying that Groove Agent One has disappeared. It’s disappointing that the Acoustic Agent sounds aren’t included though – these are the best part of Groove Agent SE 4 as it appears in Cubase Artist and Pro. Options to apply envelopes and randomness to samples’ pitch may beyond the needs of most Cubase Elements users but it's great for more technically minded people. The virtual instrument bundle has been updated to include Groove Agent SE 4, a drum machine that allows much deeper editing than the outgoing Groove Agent One. The £18 upgrade price is extremely reasonable, too. As such, Cubase Elements 8 immediately qualifies as an essential update for existing users.

The transformation is more in line with what we'd expect from upgrading to a new PC rather than updating software. Sure enough, projects that were prone to occasional glitches with ASIO Guard disabled played back smoothly with it enabled, with the software's built-in performance meter falling from around 90 to 50 per cent. We saw massive improvements when testing Cubase Artist on a desktop PC, so we installed Cubase Elements on a laptop to see if ASIO Guard 2 delivered similar results. Update new Browser: Vivaldi Reviews - developed by staffs of Operaĭigital Audio Workstation - Apple Logic Pro X 10.1 Version Reviews ASIO Guard 2 is better at looking ahead and predicting where spikes in processor, RAM or disk demands will occur, and starts working on them earlier to avoid system overloads.Ĭubase Elements' mix automation tools go way beyond what we'd rightfully expect at this price

It’s a reworked version of the engine that enables the software to run multiple tracks, mixer channels, effects and virtual instruments (hopefully) without overloading the computer's hardware resources and causing audio glitches. As with previous versions, there's no attempt to tailor the interface for less experienced users.Ĭubase Artist 8 saw a stunning performance boost with the arrival of ASIO Guard 2, so we're delighted to find it included in Elements too. This is essentially the same software, just with various advanced features, effects and virtual instruments stripped out. It shouldn’t be mistaken for consumer-oriented software, though. It's particularly strong for recording, editing and mixing live instruments, but there's also a generous supply of virtual instruments and MIDI editing tools for those who want to generate sounds inside the software.Ĭubase Elements is the entry-level version, priced well below Cubase Artist at £199 and Cubase Pro at £369. It's elegant, extremely reliable and packed with useful features that never leave us wanting. There's a wide range of superb music-production software available, but Steinberg Cubase is the one we turn to for our own recording projects. This introduced some drop-outs, but not significantly more than we experienced in version 7.5 before the tracks were duplicated.Steinberg Cubase Elements 8 is Hugely sophisticated and complex, but it is tremendous value but not for everyone. For the sake of experimentation, we duplicated every track in the project, almost doubling the demands on the system. However, the real-time peak meter fell from a highly volatile reading in version 7.5, with regular overloads, to a steady reading of around 15% in version 8. In both version 7.5 and version 8, the average load meter hovered at around 50%. The software has a performance monitor with three meters for average load, real-time peak and disk. Loading the same project into Cubase 8 Pro saw the glitches disappear completely. This project was already prone to drop-outs in version 7.5, but we added some extra effects and virtual instruments for good measure to guarantee lots of playback glitches. We loaded a project in version 7.5 that used lots of virtual instruments and demanding effects, with a mixture of Steinberg plugins and and third-party ones. Testing such performance claims is tricky, since there are so many contributing factors, but Steinberg’s assertions proved well-founded in our investigations. There’s also better buffering of virtual instruments that use disk streaming. Apparently, lower latency is only used on tracks that demand it, such as those that are being recorded. Steinberg cites a “massive engine rebuild”, with faster load times and the ability to run more plugins and lower latency settings. The headline feature for version 8 is a significant boost to performance. Steinberg Cubase Pro 8 review: performance boost
